Ten Places to Visit in Darwin Australia

The city of Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is warm and sunny from May to September so best visit the city during those months, but there are a lot of tourists visiting during the cooler dry season which runs from April to September. There are a lot of places to see in Darwin and a lot of them are historical sites and some museums.

1. Darwin Wharf Precinct - On 19 February 1942, the wharf was a target for Japanese bombs and claimed the lives of many service personnel and workers. Many of the historical landmarks remain and the place can now be explored today.

2. Fannie Bay Gaol - This place operated as Darwin’s major prison for almost 100 years from 1883. The building has two maximum security wings that were added during the 1950s and the gallows were used for executions until 1952. There is no entrance fee so you can just walk in the building and learn a bit of history about this place.

3. Browns Mart – Browns Mart is a stone building that used to be ‘Solomon’s Emporium’ in 1885. It has played many roles over the years, and today it has become a cultural and historic icon of the city and it is now used regularly for theatre and performances.

4. Adelaide River War Cemetery – This is the final resting place for 434 military personnel and civilians involved in the war effort. The cemetery is beautiful and has beautifully tended gardens providing a serene and tranquil backdrop.

5. Bicentennial Park - This park is a great place to take a walk or just relax and enjoy the scenery. It is indeed very beautiful. The park also has a breathtaking sunset view.

6. George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens – The garden is open from 7AM to 7PM. It has 42 hectares of gardens that showcase local flora and that of other tropical habitats around the world. Take a walk and stroll with your friends. The plus side to all of that is it is free.

7. Lake Alexander – This place is an ideal spot for swimming all year round. Lake Alexander is popular for picnics and barbecues. The best place to spend the day by the water and do a lot of fun things.

8. Aviation Heritage Centre – This place has an impressive collection of aircraft and displays depicting Australia’s involvement in aviation from the early pioneers up to the present time. A good place to spend your day if you’re into airplanes and aviation.

9. Casuarina Coastal Reserve – This reserve has 1500 hectares, including 8 km (5 mi) of sandy beaches. A good place to visit to stretch your legs on one of the walking paths or grab a table and settle in for a barbecue under a shady tree.

10. The Old Court House and Police – This place was built in 1884 for the South Australian Government. The colonial style buildings made from local stone have housed criminals, the Navy and today the NT Administrator’s Offices.
